ZRA Smokes Out More Smuggled Cigarettes Worth K10 Million
The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has intercepted another cigarette smuggling operation involving 800 cases of cigarettes valued at about K10 million in evaded taxes, as part of its ongoing efforts to curb illicit trade.
During the operation, ZRA officers intercepted a rigid truck bearing registration number MJ24HCGP carrying household goods and 800 boxes of Viking cigarettes declared as transit cargo destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). However, inspection revealed that the cigarettes were affixed with ZRA tax stamps, confirming they were meant for the Zambian market.
ZRA says illicit trade promotes unfair competition, poses health risks, and undermines the economy through loss of government revenue. The Authority has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying measures against smuggling, particularly excisable goods.
ZRA has called on members of the public to support the fight against illicit trade by providing information on smuggling activities, assuring that all information shared will be treated with strict confidentiality.
