Zambia Secures Major Clean Energy Boost as Cooma Solar Plant Signs Investment Deal at Zim-Zam Summit
Zambia has recorded a major milestone in its clean energy transition following the signing of an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (IPPA) between the Cooma Solar Power Plant project and the Zambia Development Agency (ZDA).
The agreement was signed during the ongoing Zimbabwe-Zambia Energy Project Summit in Livingstone.
The Cooma Solar Power Plant project will involve the development of a 50-megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic power facility, complemented by a 20 MW battery energy storage system. The project is being spearheaded by GEI Power and YEO as part of their strategic partnership in renewable energy infrastructure across the region.
The IPPA was signed by ZDA Director General Albert Halwampa, GEI Power Chief Executive Officer Giorgio Elia, and YEO Managing Director Erik Omondi.
The agreement provides legal protection, policy stability, and priority facilitation for key investment processes such as permits, approvals, importation of equipment, and access to fiscal incentives.
The project is expected to contribute to Zambia’s energy security, drive industrial growth, and support national decarbonisation efforts. It will also lead to local job creation and promote supply chain development.
