Trump To Host Xi Jinping In High-Stakes Washington Visit

Xi arrives Wednesday and will be greeted by Trump at Andrews Air Force Base. A White House welcoming ceremony follows Thursday, including a military flyover. The visit ends Friday.

It is Xi's first US visit in more than a decade and his third meeting with Trump since Trump's second term began.

A trade agreement reached in October 2025 is set to expire in November 2026. Analysts, including David Firestein of the Bush China Foundation, say the two leaders are likely to discuss extending it. Talks between US and Chinese officials this week produced little progress, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

Artificial intelligence is also expected on the agenda. Senator Bernie Sanders has called for the two countries to agree on limits to the technology, but Trump has resisted regulation, calling AI dominance central to US economic and global power.

On Taiwan, Congress has approved an arms sale that Trump has not yet signed. Analysts say he may be holding off as leverage in talks with Beijing.

Experts do not expect major agreements from the visit. Stephen Orlins, president of the National Committee on US-China Relations, said Trump believes frequent contact with Xi reduces the risk of confrontation between the two countries.
