Nollywood Icon Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

The family confirmed his death on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, through his son, Olusoji Jacobs, who shared the announcement on Instagram. The family identified the late actor as “The Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to the public, particularly bloggers and social media influencers, to respect their privacy during the mourning period.

In their statement, the family said:

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo.”

The statement also identified him by his full name, Oludotun Baiyewun Jacobs, MFR, and gave his dates as July 11, 1942 – September 16, 2026.

Jacobs leaves behind a remarkable career spanning theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before working in British theatre and television and later becoming one of the most recognisable figures in Nigeria's film industry.

Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, Jacobs was also involved in the development of Nigeria's performing arts sector through the Lufodo Group and its performing arts initiatives.

His death comes after years in which false reports of his passing circulated online. In recent years, Silva had also spoken publicly about his health and their family's experiences caring for him.

In July 2026, just weeks before his death, Joke Silva celebrated Jacobs' 84th birthday, referring to him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and expressing gratitude for his life.

The family has now asked for privacy as they mourn the veteran actor, whose career made him one of the enduring figures in Nigerian theatre, television and cinema.
