24 Schoolchildren Die in DR Congo Fire Stampede

At least 24 schoolchildren have died following a devastating fire that triggered a stampede at two schools in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The tragedy occurred in Kadutu commune, where learners reportedly rushed to escape after the fire broke out. Rebel-appointed authorities confirmed the provisional death toll on Thursday, while officials warned that the number of casualties could increase as rescue and assessment efforts continue.

Several survivors have been taken to nearby hospitals, with footage from the scene showing injured children receiving medical attention. Some adults are also reported to have died in the incident.

The fire, whose cause has not yet been established, also destroyed about 300 houses in the densely populated area. Witnesses told Reuters that although the fire had been extinguished, smoke continued rising from the remains of destroyed buildings.

The Ministry of National Education and New Citizenship in Kinshasa expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and said assessments would be conducted to determine the impact on affected schools.

“The Ministry expressed deep sorrow over the deadly fire,” the government said, adding that support would be provided to affected families and measures taken to ensure learning continues.

The incident comes days after another deadly fire-related tragedy in Kinshasa, where residents died in a stampede at a wedding venue. Authorities have since ordered increased safety measures and inspections at public facilities across the country.
