National Assembly Pushes for Inclusive Representation

The National Assembly expects the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to submit by September 17, 2026, the names of Members of Parliament coming through the Mixed Member Proportional Representation system.

Clerk of the National Assembly LOVENESS MAYAKA says the names are needed to allow the Members to undergo necessary internal processes, including induction together with directly elected Members. “This will ensure that there is no form of segregation between the two categories of Members of Parliament,” Ms. MAYAKA said.

She says the reservation of five parliamentary seats for Persons with Disabilities under the system is a significant milestone in promoting political participation and representation. Ms. MAYAKA said this in a speech read on her behalf by Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly Administration SAGE SAMUWIKA during a disability inclusion workshop for the Research Department.

Ms. MAYAKA says Parliament is reviewing its systems, infrastructure, communication and support services to remove barriers and ensure that Persons with Disabilities can participate fully in parliamentary processes.
