Zambia Police Highlights Importance Of International Cooperation In Combating Crime

The Zambia Police Service has joined law enforcement agencies around the world in commemorating the United Nations International Day of Police Cooperation, highlighting the importance of cross-border partnerships in protecting communities and fighting crime.

The 2026 commemoration is being held under the theme “Protecting Against Vulnerability – Building Trust and Legitimacy in Policing,” which focuses on strengthening public confidence in law enforcement, protecting vulnerable groups and improving responses to emerging security threats.

Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba said international police cooperation remains critical in addressing crimes that extend beyond national borders, including human trafficking, drug trafficking, cybercrime and organised crime.

“Effective policing in Zambia increasingly depends on what happens beyond Zambia’s borders. Information exchanged between law enforcement agencies helps identify threats, locate fugitives, connect investigations across jurisdictions and protect victims,” Musamba said.

The Zambia Police Service has continued to work with regional and international law enforcement partners to strengthen intelligence sharing, coordinate investigations and disrupt criminal networks operating across borders.

The Service noted that criminals are increasingly using global networks to carry out illegal activities, making cooperation between police organisations essential in ensuring public safety.

“Through international police cooperation, we can detect threats, pursue fugitives, disrupt criminal networks, protect vulnerable people and bring offenders to justice,” Musamba said.

The United Nations International Day of Police Cooperation is observed annually on September 7 to recognise the role of law enforcement collaboration in preventing and combating transnational crime.

The Zambia Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with law enforcement agencies at national, regional and international levels, guided by the goal of protecting the communities it serves.
