Evelyn Hone Student Dies in Manda Hill Road Accident

A 23-year-old Evelyn Hone College student has died following a road traffic accident in Lusaka after the Toyota Vitz he was driving overturned and landed in a drainage channel at the main entrance of Manda Hill Shopping Mall.

‎The accident happened around 23:50 hours last night. According to Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the deceased has been identified as William Chibeka, who sustained fatal injuries in the accident and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH).

‎Mr. Chilabi said Chibeka was driving a Toyota Vitz, registration number AID 549, when he lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speed. The vehicle subsequently overturned before landing in a drainage channel at the entrance of the shopping mall.

‎The accident also involved two passengers who were in the vehicle at the time. The two sustained serious injuries and were rushed to UTH for medical attention, where they are currently receiving treatment.

‎Following the accident, Chibeka’s body was deposited at the UTH mortuary, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.

‎Police have since opened an inquiry file as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue.

‎The incident has highlighted the dangers associated with excessive speed on the roads, particularly at night. Police have continued to urge motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to help reduce road traffic accidents.

‎The Zambia Police Service has urged motorists to observe speed limits, exercise caution and comply with traffic regulations in order to prevent road traffic accidents and the loss of lives.
