Mazabuka police officer shoots himself while on duty
A 33-year-old police officer, Halliard Chansa, has died at a local police post in Mazabuka. Chansa, who was serving under the Office of the President, shot himself while on duty.
According to Southern Province Police Commanding Officer, Moono Namalongo, Chansa had reported for guard duties on Monday evening and was issued an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds. He was discovered in the early hours of yesterday with a gunshot wound to the chin.
"Fellow officer Raphael Mtonga, 57, received a message from Chansa saying he was unwell but could not reach him by phone," the police report stated. Mtonga said, "When I arrived, the main gate was locked, and I could not get in. I tried calling him but there was no response."
Chansa was found in the guard room, facing upwards with the AK-47 rifle on his chest. "An empty cartridge was found about two metres from his body, and a check of the ammunition showed 29 rounds still in the rifle," Namalongo revealed.
Early investigations suggest Chansa had been experiencing stress, but police do not suspect any foul play. The firearm and related exhibits have been secured for further investigations.
