KING ZWANGENDABA’S BURIAL SITE TO BE DECLARED NATIONAL HERITAGE SITE

The National Heritage Conservation Commission has announced that it will formally recognise the burial site of King Zwangendaba in Nakonde District, Muchinga Province, as a national heritage site under the country’s heritage law, following consultations with the Ngoni Royal Establishment and the hosting of the first remembrance ceremony at Nachipeta Village.

Speaking during the commemoration held in the area of Chieftainess Waitwika, Commission Executive Director Kagosi Mwamulowe said the process will involve engagement with traditional leaders and the development of a structured conservation plan to safeguard the historic site.

“We will engage the Ngoni Royal Establishment over the burial site and ensure that it is formally recognised under the national heritage law,” Mr. Mwamulowe said.

He explained that once recognised, the site will be integrated into a broader heritage and tourism circuit linking other important cultural sites in the Northern region and beyond.

“We also intend to develop a formal conservation and management plan for the site so that it is properly preserved for future generations,” he added.

The move is expected to strengthen the preservation of Ngoni cultural heritage while opening up opportunities for tourism development in the region.
