Four Family Members Die After Consuming Illicit Beer in Kabompo

Four people from the same family have died while six others are receiving treatment after drinking suspected illicit beer in Kabompo District of North-Western Province.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Likambwili Village in Kapona area after the group allegedly consumed a homemade alcoholic drink mixed from methylated spirit, juice sachets and water.

Kabompo District Commissioner Hubert Chinyanga confirmed the tragedy, saying the matter was reported by the village headman after the victims suddenly fell ill during the night. “The group reportedly started drinking the illicit brew in the morning and later went to sleep around 21:00 hours,” Mr. Chinyanga said.

He explained that around 01:00 hours on March 11, the victims began vomiting and complaining of severe headaches before they were rushed to Kabompo General Hospital. “Unfortunately, four people later died while six others are still admitted and receiving medical treatment,” he added.

The deceased have been identified as Kandombe Syomboka, Fridah Nyambe, Muluti Syomboka and Makalicha Ndumba. Authorities have since warned members of the public against consuming illicit alcohol, describing the practice as dangerous and life-threatening.
