FIVE-MONTH-OLD BABY DIES AFTER HOUSE COLLAPSE IN LUMEZI.
A five-month-old baby has died after a house collapsed on him in Lumezi District, Eastern Province. The incident occurred yesterday, shortly after the child’s mother returned from the Under-Five clinic at Lumezi District Hospital.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, confirmed that the tragedy happened at Kapoli Village in Chief Zumwanda’s area. Mr. Mweemba identified the baby’s mother as 17-year-old Tryness Zimba of Lumezi Stores Compound. He explained that the young mother was chatting with relatives while the infant slept on a mat inside the house when one of the walls suddenly collapsed.
Other family members managed to escape unharmed, but the baby was trapped under the debris. He was later retrieved and rushed to Lumezi District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to Mr. Mweemba, the infant’s body showed no visible physical injuries. Police have opened an inquiry file, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
