FIRE DESTROYS 20 SHOPS AT KAMWALA TRADING AREA

A fire has destroyed about 20 makeshift trading structures at Kamwala Trading Area behind Downtown Shopping Mall along the railway line in Lusaka.

Zambia Police Service Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi says the fire occurred on August 18, 2026, around 20:40 hours, after Kabwata Police Station received a report and sent officers to the scene. The Lusaka City Council Fire Brigade later managed to put out the fire.

Mr. Chilabi says preliminary investigations indicate that the fire may have started from a brazier left burning at a makeshift restaurant. No injuries have been reported, while investigations are ongoing to establish the extent of the damage.
