Bridge Collapse Disrupts Traffic In Chingola.
Commerce Minister Chipoka Mulenga has described the collapse of part of the Chingola Kasumbalesa Road on the Copperbelt as regrettable after a heavy downpour damaged the section.
Speaking after the incident, Mr. Mulenga said Government is assessing what caused the damage. “The situation is regrettable, and we are currently identifying the weaknesses that led to the collapse,” he said.
He added that the contractor is working around the clock to create an alternative route as repairs begin on the affected stretch of the busy road leading to the Kasumbalesa Border Post.
A representative of concessionaire Turbo Kachin, Mawen Qiang, said the alternative road is expected to be completed within 48 hours. “We are committed to speeding up the works so that traffic flow resumes as soon as possible,” he said.
Meanwhile, some truck drivers heading to Kasumbalesa described the incident as a disaster caused by heavy rains. They have urged Government to quickly complete the alternative route, saying some trucks are carrying perishable goods.
