ABSA UNVEILS 2026 ABSA CUP ROADMAP, WINNER TO POCKET K1.1 MILLION.
ABSA Bank Zambia has unveiled the roadmap for the 2026 ABSA Cup, with the winner set to receive K1.1 million, while the runners-up will walk away with K450,000. The tournament, which remains Zambia’s only surviving cup competition, will see 21 teams compete for top honours.
Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Keith Mweemba, praised the bank for its 19-year sponsorship, describing it as a remarkable and consistent partnership. He noted that such long-term commitment places ABSA in a league of its own. Mweemba also thanked FAZ patron President Hakainde Hichilema for attending every ABSA Cup final since assuming office in 2021, saying it demonstrates strong support for football development.
Speaking during the launch, ABSA Bank Managing Director Mizinga Melu said the bank had increased its sponsorship budget for the tournament to K7 million, up from about K6 million last year. She said having the winner represent Zambia in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup was a source of pride for the bank. Melu added that individual awards, including Player of the Tournament, Golden Boot and Golden Glove, will each carry K25,000, with additional incentives sponsored at different stages of the competition.
Sports Minister Elvis Nkandu commended ABSA for supporting teams beyond financial grants, particularly through travel assistance for clubs covering long distances. He encouraged the bank to consider extending logistical support to the eventual winner, who will represent Zambia in continental competition.
The 2026 ABSA Cup will kick off on March 21 in Kabwe, with preliminary fixtures featuring teams from across the country. Confirmed round of 16 matches include Chirundu United versus Kabwe Warriors, Kafue Celtic against Zanaco, and Roan United facing Nchanga Rangers, while Red Arrows, Makeni All Stars, Power Dynamos and Mufulira Wanderers await winners from the preliminary stage.
