550 Gwembe Farmers Receive Agricultural Support Following Drought.

Government, through cooperating partners, has supported 550 smallholder farmers in Gwembe District with agricultural inputs and chemicals to improve crop production after a severe drought affected the area.

The assistance, provided for the 2025/2026 farming season under the Central Emergency Relief Fund project, targets farmers whose livelihoods were disrupted by the 2023/2024 drought.

Gwembe Senior Agricultural Officer Byde Hamududu said the initiative is being implemented by the World Food Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture as part of efforts to help farmers recover from the effects of climate change and restore food security in the district. He explained that the inputs distributed include fertilizer, maize seed, millet seed, groundnut seed, herbicides and insecticides, while farmers have also received training on proper input application and improved planting methods.

Mr. Hamududu added that the support is aimed at easing the burden faced by farmers following poor harvests caused by the drought. He said the programme is expected to enhance agricultural productivity and help farming households rebuild their livelihoods through increased crop production.
