Zambia’s Former President Edgar Lungu Dies in South Africa

Zambia’s sixth Republican President, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, has died at the age of 68 while receiving medical treatment in Pretoria, South Africa.
The announcement was made by his daughter, Tasila Lungu, who revealed that her father passed away at approximately 06:00 hours on Thursday morning.
She recalled the guiding principle of “One Zambia, One Nation” as central to his service to the country.
Mr. Lungu assumed office in 2015 following the death of President Michael Sata and was elected for a full term in 2016.
He served as Zambia’s Head of State for six years, until 2021 when he was defeated in the general election by the now current President, Hakainde Hichilema.
During his presidency, he supported infrastructure development and regional cooperation.
Although details of his illness have not been publicly disclosed, he had previously undergone surgery related to a narrowing of the oesophagus.
Meanwhile, President Hakainde Hichilema extended condolences to the Lungu family and the Patriotic Front party.
President Hichilema calls on all Zambians to unite above political differences and honour the former leader with respect and compassion.
And the House of Chiefs, representing 286 traditional leaders, also expressed deep sorrow.
Chairperson Chief Choongo praised Mr. Lungu’s distinguished service and extended prayers to his widow, former First Lady Esther Lungu, their children, and the nation.
Chief Choongo urges strength and wisdom for President Hichilema during this period of national mourning.
Meanwhile, Regional leaders joined in expressing sympathy, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa describes caring for President Lungu as a privilege and referred to him as a brother to the region, while Kenya’s President William Ruto commends him as a dedicated and humble leader.
As Zambia reflects on the life and legacy of Edgar Lungu, citizens are encouraged to uphold unity and peace while honouring his memory.
