Five RTSA Officers Arrested for Alleged Corruption

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested five officers from the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA) on allegations of soliciting and accepting bribes.

The suspects, identified as Registry Clerk Janet Chisha, Examiner Joel Banda, Road Traffic Inspectors Rhoda Chiyesu and Constance Masupelo, and Cashier Liya Kunda, have been released on bond and are expected to appear in court soon.

ACC Director-General Daphne Chabu announced the arrests during a joint media briefing in Lusaka, emphasizing the Commission's commitment to combating corruption within public institutions.

RTSA Chief Executive Officer Amon Mweemba stated that the agency is conducting internal investigations and will dismiss any officers found guilty of misconduct.

These arrests come amid broader efforts to address corruption in Zambia's public sector.

The 2024 Zambia Bribe Payers Index revealed a significant increase in bribery, with RTSA identified as one of the top institutions where bribery is prevalent, recording a 35.4% likelihood of individuals paying bribes to public officers.
