ZNS Moves Against Cadres at Lusaka Markets

Zambia National Service (ZNS) troops have moved to restore calm at City and Soweto Markets in Lusaka following reports of traders being harassed, intimidated and forced to pay money by alleged cadres after the elections. Eight suspected cadres, including three women, were apprehended at City Market and handed over to Central Police Station for further action.

The suspects were allegedly forcing traders from their trading spaces and holding them until they paid money. ZNS troops recovered K4,710 in cash and lists containing traders’ names. Traders at City Market reportedly paid K250, while those at Soweto Market said they were being forced to pay K500 for their trading spaces.

The alleged extortion has left some traders struggling to recover their businesses. One affected trader, Melody Mulenga, said the K500 taken from her was her entire trading capital. ZNS troops have continued monitoring the two markets to maintain peace and ensure traders can conduct their businesses without intimidation or disruption.
