Zambian Premier League Launches Probe After Violence at Red Arrows Football Club, Power Dynamos Football Club Match
The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has opened an investigation into crowd violence that broke out on Sunday following an MTN Super League match between Red Arrows and Power Dynamos at Nkholoma Stadium in Lusaka.
The match ended 0-0, but tensions flared shortly after the final whistle as sections of supporters clashed in the terraces. Panic spread through the stadium, forcing some spectators to flee, while others were seen scaling perimeter fences to escape the chaos. Security officers quickly moved onto the pitch to escort match officials and players to safety. Several supporters reportedly sustained injuries during the disturbances.
ZPL head of communications Kunda Zulu strongly condemned the violence, stressing that football must remain a safe and unifying sport.
“Football is a unifying sport that brings communities together, and there is absolutely no place for violence, hooliganism, or any form of misconduct before, during or after the match,” Zulu said.
League chief executive officer Joseph Chimpampwe described the conduct witnessed at Nkholoma Stadium as unacceptable and warned that those responsible would face consequences.
“The conduct witnessed at Nkholoma Stadium is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of our league,” Chimpampwe said.
“We are committed to ensuring that our stadia remain safe spaces for players, officials and supporters. We will not tolerate any acts of violence, and firm action will be taken against those found wanting.”
Chimpampwe said the league is working closely with match officials and relevant authorities to establish the circumstances that led to the unrest.
“We urge fans to support their teams passionately but responsibly,” he said. “Our goal is to ensure that football remains a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”
The league is expected to announce further action once investigations are concluded.
