Mongu November, 22,-ZANIS---Mongu District Commissioner (DC) Susiku Kamona has expressed worry with the extent of fish poisoning in the Zambezi Barotse flood plains in Western Province.
Mr. Kamona says he dismayed at the rate fishermen of Lwate in Chief Namutwi’s area were using poisonous substances to kill fish.
He said fishermen were using powdered tubers for killing fish in Lagoons that could easily wipe-out fish stocks in the natural water bodies.
The DC noted that if remained unchecked the next generation will not be able to benefit from the natural habitat.
Mr. Kamona made the remarks after conducting a joint routine operation with the department of Fisheries and Department of Wildlife and National Parks in Lwate area.
The joint operations team also held series of sensitization meetings with the fishing community in the area.
The District Commissioner has since asked law enforcers to intensify their patrols and arrest unscrupulous individuals involved in illegal fishing so that fish can be preserved.
Mr. Kamona has also appealed to traditional leaders in the area to help sensitize their subjects against bad fishing methods.
And Mongu District Fisheries Officer, Numel Phiri disclosed that apart from using poisonous substances fishermen were also using Mosquito nets for catching fish, a practice which was posing a danger to the aquatic life.
