UTHs-WNH Performs Life-Changing Surgeries for 25 Women with Pelvic Floor Disorders

The University Teaching Hospitals – Women and Newborn Hospital (UTHs-WNH) has successfully carried out life-changing surgeries for 25 women suffering from pelvic floor disorders during its Urogynecology Week initiative.
The surgeries were performed by a team of urogynecology specialists from UTHs-WNH in collaboration with the University of Zambia School of Medicine and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, with support from Fistula Foundation Zambia. The operations addressed conditions such as pelvic organ prolapse, fecal incontinence, urinary incontinence, and obstetric fistula.
Dr. Eugine Kaunda, Consultant Obstetrician-Gynecologist and Fistula Surgeon at UTHs-WNH, explained that most of these conditions are linked to childbirth injuries, weakened pelvic muscles, aging, and prolonged labor. He further revealed that demand for the services has increased, with 25 women receiving treatment this month compared to 15 in April.
The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the government and the medical team for the timely intervention, describing the surgeries as life-changing. However, they appealed for more awareness programs on pelvic floor disorders and encouraged men to play a stronger supportive role in women’s health.
Running from August 18th to 22nd, 2025, the Urogynecology Week focused on raising awareness of pelvic health while delivering specialized treatment to women from across the country. UTHs-WNH reaffirmed its commitment to advancing women’s healthcare through expert care and outreach initiatives.
