Four Arrested in Chisamba Mob Killing of 22-Year-Old Man

Police in Central Province have arrested four individuals in connection with the brutal murder of 22-year-old Enock Samfukwe Kasengele, who died after being beaten by a mob in Chisamba District last week.

The incident occurred on 16th August 2025 at around 17:00 hours at Farm No. 5, Munyama Farms. Deputy Commanding Officer Lemekani Chirwa confirmed that Samfukwe sustained severe injuries during the attack and later succumbed to them at Kabwe Central Hospital on 17th August at 01:10 hours.

A postmortem conducted by Dr. Pavlo Lermontov revealed that Samfukwe died from blunt force head injuries caused by a hard object.

Those arrested in connection with the killing include 34-year-old Nigerian farmer Nathaniel Barthram, believed to be a partner of Zambian farmer Maria Zaloumis; 23-year-old farm irrigator Gift Daka; 27-year-old irrigator Fortune Mutangeti; and 40-year-old farm manager Daniel Chilowa. Mr. Chirwa stated that the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

The case has drawn concern from human rights organizations. The Zambian Civil Liberties Union (ZCLU) has called for a transparent and credible investigation, warning that failure to handle the matter fairly could encourage mob justice and undermine the rule of law.

“Authorities must ensure justice is served,” said ZCLU Acting Deputy Executive Director Derrick Chekwe, emphasizing the importance of upholding legal processes in such cases.
