IBA Suspends Seven Broadcasting Licences Over Non-Payment

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has suspended the licences of seven broadcasting stations, comprising five radio stations and two television stations, for failure to pay their 2025 annual operating fees. The suspension, effective immediately, was announced in Lusaka today, August 20, 2025.

‎According to the IBA, the action is in line with Section 22 of the IBA (Amendment) Act No. 26 of 2010, which requires all broadcasting licensees to pay an annual fee as determined by the Board. Despite reminders and enforcement procedures, the affected stations failed to comply with the payment due on January 1 each year.

‎The suspended outlets are spread across five provinces: Copperbelt, Central, Southern, Lusaka, and Eastern. The Authority has given the stations a 30-day grace period to settle their arrears, after which the suspension may be lifted. However, failure to pay within the set period could lead to the complete cancellation of their licences.

‎IBA Acting Director General, Mrs. Susen Ndumingu, emphasized that the Authority remains committed to enforcing compliance and fostering a professional broadcasting industry that operates with accountability and sustainability.
