U.N. Calls for Immediate Gaza Ceasefire

The United Nations Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as fighting between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate.

The resolution, introduced during an emergency meeting at U.N. headquarters in New York, urges both Israel and Hamas to halt hostilities to prevent further civilian casualties. The vote followed days of intensified airstrikes and rocket attacks that have killed and injured hundreds, according to local health authorities.

U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is deteriorating rapidly.

“We are witnessing a level of destruction that demands urgent international action,” Mr. Guterres said.

Israeli officials maintain that military operations are aimed at dismantling Hamas infrastructure. A spokesperson for the Israeli government said.

Meanwhile, Hamas officials have accused Israel of targeting residential areas, a claim Israel denies.

The Security Council resolution calls for unrestricted humanitarian access and the release of hostages, but it is not legally binding. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to secure a lasting truce.
