Tragedy Strikes in Lusaka as Man Dies During Healing Session; Pastor Flees Scene

A healing session turned fatal in Kanyama West, Lusaka, when a 25-year-old man lost his life, prompting the pastor conducting the session to flee. The incident has shocked the local community and sparked a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga identified the deceased as Oscar Mwanza, who had reportedly been suffering from persistent leg pain for two weeks. Seeking relief, his family invited a local pastor, Trust Moyo, believed to be aged between 25 and 35, and affiliated with Zioni Church in Kanyama, to their home for prayers.
According to reports, Pastor Moyo advised the family to administer a mixture of eggs and Coca-Cola to Oscar. During the session, he allegedly used a heated stone to apply pressure to Oscar’s legs. Moments later, Oscar screamed, collapsed, and became unresponsive. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy occurred around 5:10 PM and was reported to authorities by Oscar’s father, Elias Mwanza, 48. In the aftermath, Pastor Moyo reportedly fled through a window, evading capture.
“Police have opened an inquiry file and are conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding this sudden and unnatural death,” said Hamoonga. “We urge members of the public to come forward with any information that may lead to the suspect’s arrest.”
Oscar’s body has been transported to the University Teaching Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
The incident has triggered discussions about the dangers of unregulated healing practices and the accountability of spiritual leaders. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when seeking alternative healing methods and to report any suspicious activities.
A manhunt is underway for Pastor Moyo, and police are appealing for cooperation from the community to bring the fugitive to justice. Meanwhile, Oscar’s family and the Kanyama West community are left grappling with grief and unanswered questions.
