November 10, 2018….women in kasempa district involved in stone crushing are at high risk.
Spokesperson for the group Ms Mode Tolopa said the women were crushing stones for sale without protecting gear. She said they were doing the job without gloves and protective glasses.
She said women have suffered a lot of injuries when crushing stones for sale.Tolapa said that the forty six women who ware mining from the same pity said they were failing to buy protecting equipment due to low prices of the crushed stones.
Majority of women who reside in senior chief kasempa’s capital said they could not stop stone crushing which was risky to their lives because that was their only source of income. The women were crushing stones without protecting their hands, eyes and heads
Ms Tolopa said the women have even failed to register their group with the registrar of society due to inadequate funds. She disclosed that majority of the women involved in stone crushing were widows.
Ms Tolopa also disclosed that the fall of prices has affected them negatively. She said that a heap of stones weighing more than 50 kilograms two years ago was selling between k20 to k25 while the same measurement is currently selling between k10 to k7 only. She said that the drop in the selling price of the crushed stones is due to the increase in the number of women venturing in the industry.
Ms Tolopa has since appealed to kasempa member of parliament Hon Brenda Tambatamba to consider empowering women. She said the poverty levels among the women were high hence called upon the area Member of Parliament to intervene.
