Pupils at Chinthimbi Primary School Face Health Threat from Tsetse Fly Bites Due to Lack of Classrooms

Learners at Chinthimbi Primary School in Lumezi District, under Chief Kazembe’s jurisdiction, are facing serious health risks as they attend classes outdoors because of an acute shortage of classroom infrastructure.

The school currently has only one functional classroom block, forcing most students to take lessons under trees, where they are vulnerable to tsetse fly bites.

A public health expert from Mwama Foundation Zambia, Justice Sakala, has expressed deep concern over the situation.

Mr Sakala warned that without urgent intervention, the children could contract sleeping sickness a life-threatening disease transmitted by tsetse flies.

As both a health professional and a concerned citizen, Mr. Sakala emphasized the urgent need for stakeholders to step in and support the construction of more classrooms at Chinthimbi Primary.

Mr. Sakala noted that swift action is essential to protect the pupils' health and maintain their right to a safe and effective learning environment.

He also points out that this issue reflects broader infrastructural challenges faced by rural schools across Zambia.

Mr. Sakala called on government authorities, non-governmental organizations, and local leaders to collaborate and address the crisis promptly.

He further added that by building additional classroom blocks, the school can shield students from tsetse fly exposure, foster a better learning atmosphere, and improve both their academic outcomes and overall well-being.
