Police Vows To Protect Children
Western Province Commanding Officer, Commissioner of Police, Rae Hamoonga, has reaffirmed the Zambia Police Service’s unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting children’s rights. He made the pledge during a courtesy visit by pupils from Kingston Hill Academy in Mongu, who were led by their School Director, Biggie Kaleashi, at the Commissioner’s office.
The visit was aimed at providing learners with a deeper understanding of children’s rights, existing protection mechanisms, and the role of the police in safeguarding young people from all forms of abuse and exploitation.
Speaking during the engagement, Mr. Hamoonga said the Zambia Police Service has put in place structures to ensure children are protected and that offenders are held accountable. He highlighted the establishment of a dedicated Child Protection Unit (CPU) under the Community Services Directorate (CSD), mandated to handle cases involving violations of children’s rights.
He explained that the unit offers professional counseling services to victims while ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice through due legal processes.
The Commissioner emphasized that the Police Service remains vigilant and proactive in protecting children from all forms of abuse and exploitation. He further called for concerted efforts from stakeholders, parents, schools, and the wider community in the fight against child abuse and in the promotion of human rights.
Encouraging the pupils to understand both their rights and responsibilities, Mr. Hamoonga urged them to uphold the law and conduct themselves responsibly. He advised them to abstain from engaging in harmful activities and to resist negative peer pressure.
“Stay away from alcohol and other drugs, desist from bad vices, concentrate on your studies, and promptly report all forms of abuse to the police,” he advised.
He stressed that education remains the greatest equalizer and a fundamental pillar for a successful and productive future.
Speaking on behalf of the learners, Amina Njobvu delivered a vote of thanks, expressing sincere appreciation to the Commanding Officer for granting them an audience and equipping them with valuable knowledge on children’s rights and personal safety.
The visit underscored the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and educational institutions in strengthening the protection of children’s rights across Western Province .
