Police Launch Manhunt Following Death Of Two Minors
The incident happened around midnight on September 17, 2026, in Samora 2 Compound and was reported to Nyimba Police Station shortly after 01:00 hours.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said 23-year-old Mary Phiri told police that her two 6 year old Samuel Phiri and nine-month-old Innocent Tembo were allegedly killed by her 26-year-old boyfriend, Winston Lungu.
Police said the man arrived at the house intoxicated and began breaking a window after Mary Phiri delayed letting him in, fearing he would turn violent. The confrontation turned physical, and he allegedly grabbed her by the neck. She managed to escape to a neighbour's house.
A neighbour who responded reportedly saw him holding one of the boys by the neck before he fled. When police arrived, they found the children unresponsive on the floor.
Mary Phiri was taken to hospital with bruises on her neck and body. The bodies have been taken to Nyimba District Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large.
