Former President Peter Mutharika has been re-elected as Malawi’s 7th leader after the Electoral Commission declared him winner of the 2025 polls, securing 56.8% of the vote against incumbent Lazarus Chakwera’s 33.0%.

The announcement was made by MEC chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, who officially confirmed Mutharika as Malawi’s 7th President. The declaration ended days of anticipation following early results that had already placed Mutharika in the lead.

In a nationally televised address, President Chakwera conceded defeat and congratulated his rival. He urged Malawians to remain united as the country transitions to new leadership.

“I accept the will of the people of Malawi. I pledge to continue serving this nation in other ways and call upon all citizens to maintain peace and stability,” Chakwera said.

The election outcome marks a dramatic political comeback for Mutharika, who previously served as head of state before losing to Chakwera in 2020. His return to power signals renewed dominance for the DPP, which campaigned on promises of economic recovery, job creation, and stronger governance.

Regional observers have commended Malawi for conducting a largely peaceful election, highlighting Chakwera’s concession as a sign of the country’s democratic maturity. Attention now turns to the official handover of power and preparations for Mutharika’s swearing-in ceremony in the coming days.
