NRFA Introduces Mobile Money Payments at Toll Gates
The National Road Fund Agency (NRFA) has introduced mobile money payment options to give motorists a more flexible and convenient way of paying toll fees at toll gates it operates across the country. The initiative forms part of the agency’s digital transformation agenda aimed at speeding up transactions and reducing risks associated with handling cash.
In a statement issued yesterday, NRFA public relations manager Alphonsius Hamachila said the new digital payment system will operate alongside existing methods such as the E-toll card and cash. He explained that motorists will now have three simple and accessible ways to pay, a move expected to reduce congestion at toll gates, improve traffic flow and enhance overall customer convenience. However, he clarified that the mobile money option will not apply at toll gates operated under public-private partnerships (PPP).
Meanwhile, NRFA information and communications technology manager Mumba Mubili said the introduction of mobile money is part of ongoing efforts to make toll payments more efficient and user-friendly. He added that the agency remains committed to using technology to modernise operations and strengthen revenue collection for road construction, rehabilitation and maintenance. Several motorists have since welcomed the new system, describing it as faster and more secure.
