KITWE NEEDS MORE TEACHERS

Kitwe District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu said Kitwe district needs more teachers following the size and population of the district.
Mr. Mpundu said this today 1st November, 2018 when the Teaching Service Commissioner Nicholas Malama called on him at his office today. Mr. Mpundu also said there is need for the education sector to start thinking seriously investing in skills development in teacher colleges of education such as bricklaying and carpentry.
“Sir I think there is need to seriously consider introducing skills development in our teacher colleges of education to reduce on dependence from other countries. Here in Zambia we really struggle to find skilled bricklayers who can do quality works because they have not undergone formal training. We are looking up to other countries such as Zimbabwe for serious construction works. Not only that our teachers need to have these skills so they can even stand on their own in an event that they are not deployed in good time, “ Mr. Mpundu said.
And Teaching Service Commissioner Nicholas Malama said the commission will look into that issue and see how best it can be handled. Mr. Malama also said the Teaching service Commission has come up with human resource recruitment committees to look into teacher recruitment exercises following the decentralization of teacher recruitment at district level. Mr. Malama further said the idea is to curb corruption in during the exercise.
“This initiative is the first of its kind here in Zambia. We have introduced this system in order to recruit our teachers in a fair and transparent manner in this year’s 2018 teacher recruitment exercise.” Mr. Malama said.
Meanwhile, reacting to the teaching commissioners remarks, Kitwe District Commissioner said the initiative by the commission to decentralize teacher recruitment exercise is a welcome move as it is going to save government of corruption allegations.
The teaching Service Commission is on the copperbelt to constitute the human resource committees to be dealing with teacher recruitment exercises.
