Honey-demand
Kasempa- October2018- Forest Fruits Zambia Director Dan Ball says the demand for honey in the country has been increasing in the recent past as most Zambians are now consuming honey.
Mr Ball said for the past 22 years the demand for honey has drastically increased both on the local and international market.
Forest Fruits Zambia is a company based in Mwinilunga and Kasempa which is the largest exporter of honey in Africa exporting about 100 tonnes annually.
Mr Ball said being the largest exporter of honey in Zambia, their intention is to open more areas for honey production to meet the market demand.
He said the company does not only trains farmers in honey production but also buys their products to ensure consistency in the quality of honey.
He said the company has recruited and trained six thousand bee keepers in Mwinilunga and 31 in Kasempa for the past 22 years resulting in improved production of honey.
Mr Ball said that the quality of honey being exported is no longer watery and does not smell smoke thereby adding value to the product.
He said the graph of production has not been stable hence his company is working on stabilizing the production in order to make it predictable after which the company would concentrate on value addition.
And government has called on the Forest Fruits Zambia to take advantage of the local market such as hospitals, boarding schools and shops that have recognized honey as a healthy consumption.
Kasempa District Administrative officer, Kelvin Ndandanda urged the company to be pioneers of supplying honey in the country and not only concentrate on exporting.
He urged the company to generate interest in the farmers by engaging them in bee keeping through capacity building because North-western province has a lot of woodlands that can bring forth the best results in honey production.
