FORMER VICE PRESIDENT DR. GUY SCOTT DIES

Zambia is mourning the passing of former Republican Vice President Dr. Guy Lindsay Scott, a veteran politician, economist and one of the country’s most distinguished public servants.

Dr. Scott served as Zambia’s 11th Vice President from 2011 to 2014 under the Patriotic Front government of late President Michael Sata. Following President Sata’s death in October 2014, he made history by becoming Zambia’s Acting President, the first white African to serve as Head of State in a sub-Saharan African country since the end of apartheid.

Born on 1 June 1944 in Livingstone, Dr. Scott was educated in Zambia before pursuing higher studies in economics at the University of Cambridge and the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. Before entering frontline politics, he worked as an economist, farmer and academic.

His political career spanned several decades. He served as Member of Parliament for Lusaka Central and later as MP for Mpika, holding various ministerial portfolios before rising to the office of Vice President. Throughout his career, he was known for his outspoken nature, intellectual contributions and commitment to public service.

Dr. Scott played a significant role in shaping Zambia’s political landscape and remained an influential voice in national affairs even after leaving office.

His death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Zambia’s history. He is remembered for his service to the nation, his unique place in African politics and his contributions to Zambia’s democratic development.

Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family and Government.
