GOVERNMENT SIGNS K4.3 BILLION DEAL FOR SOLAR POWER PROJECTS
The Government has signed K4.3 billion Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracts to build 2MW Solar PV power plants in each of Zambia’s 156 constituencies. Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary for Technical Services Nicholas Phiri said the project will produce a combined 312MW to help reduce the country’s power deficit.
Mr. Phiri said five contractors have been awarded the works, which are expected to be completed within 12 months from site mobilisation. He added that the project will be managed through a Special Purpose Vehicle with support from the Ministries of Finance and National Planning, Local Government and Rural Development, Energy, and ZESCO.
He said the initiative, which will be partly funded through the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), will improve access to electricity, create jobs, support business growth, and strengthen service delivery in communities. Contractors’ representative Mr. Liao Jiannfeng pledged to complete the project on time, while Lusaka Town Clerk Oliver Muuka praised the Government for promoting sustainable energy and community development.
