Escalating Vandalism of Public Infrastructure Alarms Lusaka City Council.

The Lusaka City Council (LCC) is sounding the alarm over a surge in vandalism targeting public infrastructure, raising concerns about safety and development within the city.
In a recent statement issued by Chola Mwamba, the Public Relations Manager of the Lusaka City Council (LCC), concerns were expressed regarding the escalating vandalism of public infrastructure across the city. Mwamba highlighted that certain individuals, described as "unscrupulous," are unlawfully removing metal components from public amenities and selling them to scrap metal dealers.
"One of the most impacted areas is road infrastructure, where metal elements used for pavement alignments are being stolen, compromising both road safety and the city's development." Mwamba cited the example of Mumbwa Road, where the absence of these metal bars has led to significant traffic accidents.
To combat this issue, the LCC has initiated comprehensive inspections and investigations targeting scrap metal dealers within the city. Mwamba emphasized the importance of identifying and addressing the sale of stolen metal items sourced from public infrastructure and roads.
The maintenance and repair of damaged portions of roads and public facilities require substantial funding, further underscoring the need for citizens to take responsibility for safeguarding public infrastructure. The public is urged to exercise their civic duty by initiating citizen's arrests upon witnessing acts of vandalism or theft or by reporting such incidents to the council or the nearest police station.
In reaffirming the council's dedication to prompt service delivery, Mwamba called upon the public to support their efforts in achieving these objectives.
The Lusaka City Council urges citizens to collaborate in combatting vandalism to ensure the safety and development of the city's infrastructure.
