Chipata West 100MW Solar Project Breaks Ground, Boosting Zambia’s Green Energy Drive

Zambia’s push toward its ambitious 1,000MW solar energy target has gained momentum with the groundbreaking of the 100MW Chipata West Solar PV project in Eastern Province.

The project, located in Chief Chinyaku’s Chiefdom, is set to play a major role in strengthening national energy security and advancing sustainable development.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Musekela, ZESCO Chief Operating Officer, Eng. Peter Chamfya, said the project demonstrates the country’s commitment to diversifying its energy mix.

“The Chipata West 100MW solar project is a step towards achieving national energy security and self-sufficiency. We are reducing reliance on hydropower while promoting sustainable development,” Eng. Chamfya stated.

Government has described the project as a milestone in President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of a fully electrified Zambia powered significantly by renewable energy.

Eastern Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Dr. Lewis Mwape, said the government’s “Solar Explosion” initiative aims not only to boost power supply for homes, businesses, and industries but also to promote clean energy, cut carbon emissions, and enhance sustainability.

He added that government has enacted forward-looking energy policies over the past year, including accelerated regulations and the removal of duties on imported solar equipment to attract investment.

Meanwhile, Chief Chinyaku commended President Hichilema for fulfilling his promises of taking development to rural communities.

“I am excited this development has reached our chiefdom. It is proof that the President is delivering on his word. I urge him to continue with this work,” the traditional leader said.

The Chipata West 100MW solar project, scheduled for completion within 12 months, is expected to feed clean energy into the local grid, serve rural communities, create jobs, enhance trade, support skills transfer, and contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
