Drunk Man Survives Elephant Attack in Mambwe After Singing in the Wild

A 25-year-old man from Mambwe District is recovering in hospital after surviving an attack by an elephant, which was reportedly triggered by his loud singing while walking home drunk through a wilderness area.

The victim, identified as Patrick Mwanza, was returning from a drinking spree late Sunday night when the incident occurred. Mwanza, who is said to be well-known in his community for singing loudly after consuming alcohol, was walking home instead of using his bicycle, despite the route cutting through a bushy area frequented by wildlife.

According to Eastern Province Police Commissioner, Robertson Mweemba, Mwanza began singing loudly along the way, unknowingly drawing the attention of a nearby elephant.

“The elephant seemed agitated by the noise and attacked the man, inflicting two deep cuts on his buttocks and fracturing his left leg,” Mweemba said.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing the man's singing abruptly turn into screams for help. Nearby residents rushed to his aid and managed to scare the elephant away before the situation worsened.

Mwanza was rushed to Mambwe District Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

“He sustained serious injuries including a fractured leg, cuts on the buttocks, and general body pain,” added Mweemba. “A medical report form was issued and officers will be visiting the victim at the hospital for further details.”

Police have since advised residents in wildlife-prone areas to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary movement at night, especially under the influence of alcohol.
