Teenage Pregnancies Decline in Eastern Province, But Remain a Concern

The Eastern Province of Zambia has seen a reduction in teenage pregnancies, from 33,070 cases in 2023 to 32,000 last year, a decrease of over 1,000 cases.

Despite this decline, the province still records the highest number of teenage pregnancies compared to other provinces.

According to Eastern Province Minister Peter Phiri, the country recorded 193,620 teen pregnancies in 2023, with Eastern Province contributing the highest number of cases. Minister Phiri expressed concern that if the situation is not addressed, it could perpetuate inter-generational poverty in families.

The Minister's concerns were raised during the International Day of the Family in Chipata, where he emphasized the need to address the issue of teenage pregnancies to ensure the well-being of families and communities.
