WHO Donates Mpox Vaccines to Zambia

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has donated over 1,000 Mpox vaccines to Zambia as the country records a rise in confirmed cases.

Minister of Health Elijah Muchima announced that Zambia currently has **23 active Mpox cases, with 21 patients under home-based care. He clarified that the vaccines are yet to arrive in the country and will be administered primarily to individuals who have come into contact with confirmed patients.

Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka today, Dr. Muchima emphasized the importance of early intervention and public cooperation in managing the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, he provided a positive update on the cholera outbreak, stating that the situation has been contained. “The last cholera case was reported in Kabwe on May 13, 2025,” he said.

In a related development, Dr. Muchima announced that Zambia will host the 75th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa from August 25 to 27, 2025, in Lusaka. The event is expected to draw health ministers and experts from across the continent.

WHO Country Representative Dr. Clement Lusaba welcomed the upcoming conference, noting that it comes at a time when health sectors across Africa are facing mounting challenges due to declining financial support.

He stressed the importance of collaborative strategies and renewed investment to strengthen healthcare systems across the region.

The government has urged citizens to remain vigilant, observe hygiene protocols, and cooperate with health authorities as efforts continue to manage both Mpox and other public health risks.
