Police Probe Child Desertion After Newborn Found Abandoned in Lusaka

The Zambia Police Service has launched investigations into a case of child desertion after a newborn baby boy was found abandoned in Barlastone Park, Jamaica area of Lusaka. 

The incident occurred on December 9, 2025, and was reported by a passerby who discovered the infant shortly after 14:00 hours.

Police Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, said the 35-year-old woman found the unclothed newborn crying and exposed to rainfall near the roadside. 

He said community members quickly joined in to assist, before helping report the matter to the nearest police station. 

He added that Officers responded promptly and ensured the baby was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

“The Zambia Police Service commends the community members for their quick and compassionate response,” Mr. Chilabi said. 

Police have since appealed to anyone with relevant information to come forward and assist in identifying the person or persons responsible for abandoning the child. 

The act is classified as unlawful and punishable under Zambian law.

“All information provided will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,” Mr. Chilabi assured.
