Peter Nwachukwu Sentenced To Death By Hanging For Murder Of Gospel Singer Osinachi

LAGOS, 28 April 2025 — A Nigerian High Court has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.
The ruling comes nearly two years after Osinachi's tragic death in April 2022, a case that gripped the nation and sparked widespread outrage over domestic violence.
Presiding Judge Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme delivered the judgment on Friday, concluding a trial that revealed harrowing accounts of repeated domestic abuse. The court found overwhelming evidence that Peter Nwachukwu subjected his wife to years of physical and emotional violence, culminating in her untimely death.
Peter Nwachukwu was initially charged with 23 counts, including culpable homicide, emotional abuse, and assault. The conviction centered on the most serious charge—culpable homicide—which under Nigerian law carries the death penalty.
The late Osinachi Nwachukwu was a celebrated gospel artist, best known for her hit song "Ekwueme." Her death triggered nationwide condemnation of gender-based violence and renewed calls for stronger protections for victims of domestic abuse.
Following the judgment, rights activists and public figures hailed the decision as a landmark victory for justice and a stern warning against domestic violence.
Peter Nwachukwu is expected to appeal the verdict, although legal experts say overturning the ruling will be extremely difficult given the extensive evidence presented during the trial.
Osinachi leaves behind four children, and tributes continue to pour in from across the world, honoring her musical legacy and calling for ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable individuals in society.
