Muchima Calls For Synergy In Tackling Global Health Challenges

Health Minister Elijah Muchima has stressed the urgent need for synergy and collective action in addressing the complex health challenges affecting the global community.

Speaking in Lusaka during the official opening of the Regional One Health Conference for Eastern and Southern Africa, Dr Muchima said the One Health approach is vital in preventing and responding to health threats that cut across borders and sectors.

He said climate change is intensifying existing health challenges, pointing to the increased frequency of floods, droughts and rapid population growth, which are resulting in greater interactions between humans, livestock, wildlife and ecosystems has heightened the risk of disease transmission and environmental strain.

Dr Muchima noted that the One Health approach recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal and environmental health, making it essential for governments and institutions to work collaboratively.

“No single country or sector can win the fight against emerging health threats alone. We must combine our strengths, share intelligence and coordinate our efforts,” said Dr. Muchima.

He added that stronger policy alignment, improved intelligence sharing, efficient resource deployment and enhanced coordination are necessary to address the region’s health challenges.

“The health threats we face today from climate driven diseases to new outbreaks require us to break traditional silos and operate as one united system,” he said.

The Regional One Health Conference has brought together experts, policymakers and stakeholders from across Eastern and Southern Africa to discuss strategies for strengthening collaborative health systems and improving preparedness in the face of evolving global challenges.
