Big Mama Market Set to Open as LCC Begins Issuing Tenancy Agreements
The Lusaka City Council (LCC) has announced the commencement of tenancy agreement issuance for the newly constructed Big Mama Market, formerly Munyaule Market, marking a major step toward reopening the trading facility.
Priority has been given to the first 150 traders who were relocated to temporary trading spaces in 2024 before construction began.
LCC Public Relations Manager Chola Mwamba, said the initial group of traders will occupy Blocks D and E, which are scheduled to open on January 15, 2026.
Blocks A, B and C will follow in March once ongoing construction works are completed.
The process is being spearheaded by Kaddoura Construction Limited in collaboration with Chinika Ward 22 Councillor Masautso Ngoma.
“This milestone reflects our commitment to prioritizing traders who were affected during the redevelopment process and ensuring fairness in the allocation of trading spaces,” Ms. Mwamba said.
The Council clarified that the development follows a formal resolution under Minute Number C/23/06/19, which approved the leasing of the former Munyaule Market to Kaddoura Construction Limited under a build–operate–transfer model.
This arrangement was aimed at delivering a modern market with improved hygiene, enhanced safety and upgraded trading conditions.
“The Lusaka City Council remains committed to maintaining a safe and improved environment for all traders to conduct their business,” Ms Mwamba added.
