India’s Modi to Visit China Amid Rising Tensions With U.S.

NEW DELHI/BEIJING – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit China for the first time in seven years, signaling a significant diplomatic move as tensions continue to grow between New Delhi and Washington.

Modi’s upcoming trip, confirmed by officials in both capitals, is widely seen as a response to escalating disagreements with the United States over trade, regional security, and military alignment. His last visit to China was in 2018, before a series of border skirmishes and geopolitical shifts cooled relations between the two Asian powers.

According to a Reuters report, the visit will focus on “strategic realignment” and economic cooperation, including discussions on new trade routes, joint energy projects, and regional peace efforts.

Officials in India have remained tight-lipped about the full agenda but emphasized that “a recalibration of regional partnerships” is underway.

China’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the visit, describing it as a “positive step toward stability and mutual understanding.” The announcement comes at a time when the United States has voiced concerns over India’s recent decisions to increase tariffs on American tech goods and limit defense cooperation.

Analysts suggest this visit may mark a turning point in India’s foreign policy direction, particularly as it balances its relations with major world powers amid shifting global alliances.
