ICU Third Cohort of Artisanal Mining Students Conduct Practical Training in Mumbwa.

The Information and Communications University (ICU) third cohort of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining students held their practical training in Mumbwa District as part of their learning programme.

The practical looked at three major elements, iron, copper, and gold. Students toured mining sites to put into practice what they learnt during theory sessions, including rock identification and mineral processing, with the support of various facilitators.

Professor Oliver Silumbe, Director of Research and Innovation at the Information and Communications University and one of the facilitators for the short course, said the programme aims to ensure that those trained practice responsible mining. He explained that the training does not only focus on gold extraction but also covers key minerals such as iron and copper, while also teaching environmental protection and rehabilitation after mining activities.

Mr. Charles Wamulwange, one of the facilitators, said it is important to maintain environmental standards in mining. He added that the course offered at the Information and Communications University is important as miners need broad knowledge in areas such as mineral processing and testing.

One of the students, Philip Muchili, said the knowledge gained is critical for safe mining practices. He encouraged other miners to take up the course and thanked the institution for offering such a programme, stating, “The way I came is not the way I will go back.”

The practical training highlights the importance of combining theory and hands-on experience in equipping miners with the skills needed for safe, responsible, and sustainable mining practices.
