ICU Students Showcase Innovations As TME Education Marks 10 Years
Engineering students from the Information and Communications University have showcased their innovations at the Cavendish Hub as TME Education marks ten years of promoting practical technology and STEM education.
The anniversary programme brought together students from different institutions to present projects in Artificial Intelligence, robotics, programming and electronics, giving learners an opportunity to apply their skills to practical challenges.
Speaking during the event, Cavendish University Zambia Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Dr. Oscar Correia, said the world is entering an interesting period marked by rapid technological change and uncertainty.
“But actually, it's an interesting time because it's a time that we call a singularity.”
Among the exhibitors was fourth-year ICU student Gilbert Simutowe, who is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Simutowe showcased an innovation designed to protect household appliances from voltage fluctuations through overvoltage and undervoltage protection. He explained that the system can be customised to set different voltage thresholds for individual appliances and automatically disconnect a load when the set threshold is exceeded.
The event also gave school learners an opportunity to explore emerging technologies. Form Two pupil at David Kaunda National STEM School, Tao Munene, said she was excited to learn about robotics, sensors and virtual reality.
Munene said she also learned about different sensors used in robots, including ultrasonic and touch sensors, and how they help robots detect objects and respond accordingly.
The anniversary programme also featured presentations of Artificial Intelligence projects, AI-powered robots and VEX robots, while Arduino kits were presented to students to support continued practical learning and innovation.
The event provided a platform for students to demonstrate their skills, exchange ideas and explore how technology can be used to develop practical solutions to everyday challenges.
