’Hyena-like’ Man Arrested After Threatening to Eat Infant in Lundazi
Police in Lundazi District have detained a 42-year-old man who allegedly terrorised villagers by behaving like a hyena and threatening to eat a baby, just days after a real hyena attacked a four-year-old boy in the same area.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the suspect, identified as Joseph Jere of Wadokota Village, forced his way into a house in Silyobi Village on Saturday evening and confronted 26-year-old Stanley Moyo, where he allegedly displayed aggressive, animal-like behaviour and demanded to “eat” Moyo’s sister’s infant.
Villagers intervened and restrained Jere before any harm could occur, later handing him over to police at Mwase Police Post under Lundazi Police Station, where he remains in custody to assist with investigations.
The incident comes amid heightened fear in the district following a hyena attack on a four-year-old boy in Gwilani Village that left the child with severe head injuries, although police have confirmed that no further injuries have been reported in the affected areas.
