GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE THROUGH FLYING DOCTOR SERVICE
Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to providing quality healthcare to all citizens through the Zambia Flying Doctor Service (ZFDS), describing it as a critical pillar in ensuring equitable access to medical services across the country.
Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr. Thabo Kawana made the remarks today when he witnessed the evacuation of musician General Ozzy, whose real name is David Banda, and his colleague from Monze District to Lusaka following a fatal road traffic accident.
The two were airlifted by the Zambia Flying Doctor Service and transported to Lusaka for specialised medical attention, demonstrating what Mr. Kawana described as Government’s firm resolve to guarantee timely healthcare interventions regardless of geographical location or social status.
Mr. Kawana emphasized that the Flying Doctor Service remains available to all Zambians, stating that today’s evacuation, including that of a well-known public figure, underscores Government’s policy of equal access to quality healthcare for every citizen.
He further disclosed that Government is currently facilitating the evacuation of conjoined twins from Kapiri-Mposhi and another patient from Kabwe District to enable them access specialised medical treatment. He said these efforts highlight Government’s dedication to providing complex and life-saving medical services when needed.
The Permanent Secretary also revealed that the Flying Doctor Service has recently received new aircraft, including a helicopter, significantly strengthening its operational capacity. The additional equipment is expected to improve response time and enhance access to emergency care in hard-to-reach areas.
Mr. Kawana noted that the expanded capabilities of the Service will contribute to improved healthcare outcomes nationwide, describing the development as part of Government’s proactive and citizen-centred approach to healthcare delivery.
The Zambia Flying Doctor Service continues to play a vital role in bridging the gap between rural health facilities and specialised referral hospitals, ensuring that no Zambian is left behind in accessing critical medical care.
